The State University System of New York is facing, like many other universities around the world, a severe budget crisis. At SUNY Stony Brook, we recently held a conference on the future of public higher education, which focused largely on financial threats to the university and in particular, the ability of public higher educational institutions to continue to provide education as a public good.
I wrote an open letter afterward to respond to the conference and invite dialogue about the philosophical and theoretical foundations of higher education. It is posted here, on our blog:
