This New York Times article highlights some of the reasons that serious literature of all kinds, including philosophy, is struggling to survive in the public sphere--in this case, in the public libraries of America. What was once an educational institution whose mission was to lead us to our "better selves" has now become just another marketplace where information is reduced to the level of a consumer commodity, to entertainment, designed to manipulate us to consume more:
