Thank you for the welcome, Cori! You can thank a proactive gentleman at the Eastern APA for my membership. I forget his name, but he was promoting the group, and I've had joining on my to-do list ever since.
Looking forward to collaborating,

Hi Cori,
Sorry it has taken me so long to respond to your post.
I joined the MacArthur Foundation in 1995. I had wanted to work for this organization for many years. I wanted the think-tank environment, and I wanted the benefits, which included 100% tuition reimbursement for study of any kind. Alas, this benefit has since been scaled back somewhat.
I entered the Mental Health program as an executive secretary and studied philosophy at Loyola University Chicago on the side. ( I already had a master's degree from my former days in a Jesuit divinity school.) I received my MA in philosophy in 2007. My work load at MacArthur has prevented me from pursuing my PhD. I am now program administrator for the Justice Reform program in US Programs.
Foundations are good places for public philosophers, but they are not easy to get into. And even if you are on the inside, as I am, it can be difficult to impossible to become a program officer. It is as a program officer in a foundation that a philosopher could have some impact. It is at this level that the think-tanking happens.
If you are interested in getting involved with foundations, I would recommend looking into Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy, a young affinity group that is having its national conference April 4-6 in Chicago. www.epip.org Already having a job in philanthropy is not a requirement.
I look forward to meeting you in Atlanta.

Thank you for the nice welcome. Glad to have found this organization.
Thanks for the note, Cori. Looking forward to engaging with others on the site!
Hey Cori!
Great to hear from you and thanks for your friend request. There aren't all that many of us interested in exploring the public side of philosophy so I am grateful to meet you (if only virtually). We'll have to talk about possible ways of collaborating.
