Since I first became interested in philosophy, I believed that philosophy can and should make a difference in the world and that philosophers have a public responsibility. Like any discipline, philosophy has its aspects that are for practitioners only, but the questions to which philosophy is directed also mean that it has a wider, public scope. Philosophy has much to contribute to public life and public life suffers when those contributions aren't made.
