Philosophy is usually caricatured as 'armchair theorizing' - I think this is a perhaps literally true but misleading characterization. I am interested in public philosophy because I think the 'public' aspect is integral if not essential to philosophy. A stringent public-academy dichotomy, in terms of both career choice and research interests, preemptively constrains our philosophical perspectives. I agree with the ancient thinkers that philosophy is ultimately about eudaimonia, and to this extent the predicate of 'public' in front of philosophy is redundant if not tautological.
