I work within a major private foundation that engages in a wide range of public policy issues, which, I think, should be informed by rich traditions of continental philosophy and theory.

Hi Stephen,

I just responded to your post on my discussion about going public. Unfortunately, I replied without first taking a peek at your profile to see what you do professionally. Now that I see that you are with the MacArthur Foundation, I have other questions from another angle. How did you find your way into a private foundation? Assuming that you were trained in philosophy, when did you "leave" the discipline? I know a number of graduate students who want to do philosophical work without talking strictly to other philosophers, but we are often told that we are being trained to go on the job market as philosophers for universities to do research....etc. It seems that doing anything but this, or other options for what one could do, remain undisclosed and under-explored as viable opportunities.
